Why does Utua recommend the Mastercard World Elite AJB for your consideration?
The Mastercard World Elite AJB is Aljazira Bank’s (AJB) flagship credit card, issued by a Saudi financial institution regulated by SAMA, the Saudi Central Bank. Designed for frequent travelers, the product combines airport lounge access, travel insurance, concierge service, and the bank’s own Mokafaaty Rewards program.
With all these benefits, which we’ll go through in detail, it becomes easier to point you toward the card that best fits your current stage in life. That said, keep in mind that the card’s target audience is higher-income earners, since its features and perks are designed to deliver luxury and exclusive experiences.
Rewards and benefits of the Mastercard World Elite AJB in practice
The Mastercard World Elite AJB combines Mokafaaty points with an extensive list of travel benefits. Beyond the points, the card gives unlimited access to lounges in more than a thousand airports once the benefit is activated with a minimum international purchase of USD 1, a discount of up to 15% at IHG hotels, up to 35% off car rentals with Avis, and the chance to earn Titanium status in the Global Hotel Alliance Discovery program.
Another important area is the built-in protection: travel insurance for delays, cancellations, and lost luggage, travel medical insurance, rental car damage coverage, and purchase protection for up to 180 days, all managed through the Walaa platform.
On top of that are everyday security features, such as instant SMS notifications for every transaction and 3D Secure authentication. It’s a package built for frequent travelers, though it only pays off when the benefits are actually used.
What are Mokafaaty points?
Mokafaaty points are Aljazira Bank’s own rewards currency, used specifically on cards in the Mokafaaty line, such as the Mastercard World Elite AJB. Every purchase made with the card automatically earns points: 1.75 points for every SAR 1 spent internationally and 1.25 points for every SAR 1 spent within Saudi Arabia.
In other words, spending abroad earns more points than spending locally, which makes sense for a card aimed at frequent travelers. Accumulated points can be redeemed for different types of rewards within the bank’s program, such as products, vouchers, flights, hotel stays, car rentals, or even donations, depending on the options available at the time of redemption.
Keep in mind that certain merchant categories are excluded from earning points (Aljazira Bank provides this list in a separate document), so it’s worth checking those exceptions before relying on the card as your main source of points for a particular type of spending.
Fees and costs of the Mastercard World Elite AJB
Before applying, it’s worth reviewing the fee schedule: an annual fee of SAR 1,000 (plus 15% VAT), a monthly profit rate of 2.5% on the balance under the Tawarruq mechanism, an APR of 36.57% per year, a foreign transaction fee of 2%, a cash advance fee of 3% capped at SAR 75 per transaction, and a minimum monthly payment equal to 5% of the outstanding balance or SAR 200, whichever is higher.
Because this is an Islamic card, the bank uses the concept of a profit margin instead of conventional interest, following the Tawarruq mechanism with no hidden interest charges. Even so, the 36.57% APR shows that carrying a balance from one month to the next comes at a high cost — which is why the 25-day grace period after the statement date should be used to pay off the balance in full whenever possible.
Author’s opinion
The Mastercard World Elite AJB stands out for the breadth of its travel benefits and for Aljazira Bank’s transparency in publicly disclosing its fee schedule and Initial Disclosure, which helps consumers make a more informed decision. Its Sharia-compliant structure, regulated by SAMA, also reinforces the product’s institutional reliability.
On the other hand, the SAR 1,000 annual fee and the 36.57% APR make the card expensive for anyone who doesn’t pay the statement in full every month. Like any premium card, the value of the Mastercard World Elite AJB depends on how it’s used: it rewards those who travel and plan their spending, but it can penalize those who carry a balance frequently.
