Why does Utua recommend the AlAhli Cashback Premium for you?

The AlAhli Cashback Premium, a credit card issued by Saudi National Bank (SNB), is one of the most talked-about options in the Saudi market for people whose fixed expenses are concentrated in categories like fuel, dining, and groceries. The product promises meaningful cash returns in these categories, along with international acceptance and travel-oriented benefits.

Unlike cashback cards that work with a single rate and a fixed monthly cap, the AlAhli Cashback Premium segments returns by spending category and doesn’t limit the total amount received each month to a fixed riyal value — only to the card’s credit limit.

This design makes the product a competitive choice for anyone with recurring expenses in fuel, dining, groceries, and pharmacies who wants to turn part of their essential spending into money back, rather than competing for a single cap shared with every other spending category.

Another point in the card’s favor is the combination of cashback with travel, lifestyle, and insurance benefits, which extends the product’s usefulness beyond everyday spending. Acceptance at more than 32 million merchants also reduces the risk of the card being declined during international trips — a sensitive point for anyone combining cashback on overseas purchases with frequent travel, and a differentiator not every local cashback card offers.

What do these advantages mean in practice?

In practice, the AlAhli Cashback Premium works as a card built for recurring spending. The higher cashback tiers cover categories that weigh heavily on most households’ monthly budgets, while the rate on international purchases appeals to frequent travelers or those who shop on foreign platforms.

Since the total monthly cashback has no overall cap — limited only by the card’s credit limit — the product tends to be more advantageous for those whose spending is concentrated in the higher-percentage categories, since the other tiers are capped between 100 and 200 riyals per month.

Fees and costs of the AlAhli Cashback Premium

The AlAhli Cashback Premium charges an annual fee of 200 Saudi riyals, a cost that needs to factor into any assessment of whether the cashback earned offsets the price of keeping the card active. Because this is a Sharia-compliant product structured around the Tawaruq mechanism rather than conventional interest, the card applies a monthly profit rate of 3.1% plus the Tawaruq rate.

This results in an effective annual cost (APR) of 41.59% on any revolving balance — a rate that only applies to those who don’t pay their statement in full. Cardholders who use the cash withdrawal feature pay an additional fee of 3% on the amount withdrawn, capped at 75 Saudi riyals, while international purchases carry a 2% surcharge on the converted amount.

Beyond these core fees, the AlAhli Cashback Premium agreement provides for a 50 Saudi riyal fine on statements overdue by more than 60 days — an amount that, according to the bank, is donated to charity per guidance from the Sharia compliance committee — along with a monthly fee of 0.3% on the outstanding balance related to the Tawaruq transaction, with all charges subject to the country’s applicable VAT.

There are also occasional costs, such as 100 Saudi riyals for card reactivation and 15 Saudi riyals for card replacement — items that rarely weigh on the monthly budget, but that reinforce the importance of reading the full agreement and current terms and conditions before applying, since the figures above may change throughout the year.

Author’s opinion

In this analysis’s assessment, the main merit of the AlAhli Cashback Premium is that it doesn’t impose a single, low cap on monthly cashback: this rewards people who already have these everyday expenses, without requiring any change in behavior. It’s a different logic from cards that use cashback as bait to drive up spending — here, the gain tends to track a spending pattern the person would have anyway.

The point of caution lies in the complexity: with six different cashback tiers, there’s a risk of steering purchases toward higher-return categories just to “make the most” of the higher rate, which strips cashback of its role as a reward and turns it into an incentive to spend more.
